WHERE USED/FITTED

The Type 1/2 is a medium powered spark transmitter which was originally fitted as the main set in Cruisers and Flotilla Leaders from the middle of the first decade of the 20th century. The set being finally finessed by 1913/14. With the introduction of the Arc for transmitting CW. Type 1 was fitted in conjunction with Type 16, an Arc transmitter. Valve transmitters later replaced the Arc set and Type 1. When fitted in the Second Offices of Heavy ships, the set is modified, having one rotary converter, motor starter etc, but not motor buzzer. The set is then known as the Type 2. See the 20th Century 1900-1913 file for much detail on this and other earlier systems. From the late 1920's when associated not with spark or arc but with valve, the combinations of sets and their use were as follows:
(a.) Type 1/2 = with Type 16 in main office of Cruisers and Flotilla Leaders.

(b.) Type 1/2 - with Type 34 in second office of heavy ships.
