In July 1980 HMS Mercury entered a team into the Portsmouth and Medway Skill-at-Arms shooting competition which took place at Longmoor Range.
With the aid of Staff Sergeant Martin Corcoran who was on loan to HMS Mercury the team virtually achieved a clean sweep of the individual events. SSGT Corcoran won the Sheerness Cup for overall champion, the Ryder Cup, the Willis Cup and the Tipner Shield for rifle events, and the Queen Elizabeth Cup for sub-machine gun competition. HMS Mecury's team also won the Culme-Seymour Cup for snap shooting at 200 yards, the Willis Trophy for Service rifle over 300 yards and the Portsmouth Gun as overall champions. Thanks to RO1(T) Pete Butt, a member of the Mercury team, for the photos.
